Stop Your Mishits and Break 80

Are you aware that a slower backswing and smooth transition & acceleration will deliver a more consistent hit? I’m NOT talking to the power hitters. I’m talking to golfers who want to break 80. Forget about trying to hit 300+ yards if you want to be accurate. The male pros are fun to watch on TV but you need to lower your expectations and learn from the great female golfers. Control your swing to avoid your MISHITS! (Not to be mispronounce as the smelly word that it is. I couldn’t resist.)

Learn from the Winning Pros
Inbee Park has a controlled golf swing that you should watch. On November 15, 2015 she had the lowest average female tournament score for the year. She has a very deliberately slow backswing and a smooth transition (without any jerking action). She is not the longest hitter but she is definitely the most accurate. Accuracy is more important than length when you want to break 80. Perfection around the green allows you to break 70.

Jordon Speith is another example of the importance of landing your drives in the fairway. Nick Faldo (CBS Sports analyst interview with Reuters) is wondering why this 22-year-old is coming off one of the best seasons in recent memory and wants to increase his driving length. Jordan said that he wants 5 or 10 yards longer off the tee by improving his swing and working hard in the gym.

Last season Jordon’s driving distance ranking was 78th at 292 yards. Faldo said that there is no need to keep up with Jason Day, Rory McIlroy or Dustin Johnson. Spieth is placing a greater emphasis on wedge play, putting and tournament preparation. “After a two-major, five-win season that saw Jordon climb to world No. 1, it’s clear that approach works, too.

Solve your Swing Problem BEFORE you Swing
Unfortunately we all watch golf tournaments on TV. Our minds lock into the thought of power and speed when we swing every time we step up to the ball. Here is how you get those dumb thoughts out of your mind:
• Choose one club longer than you need for your shot. Swing easy and enjoy the result.
• When driving, select a target distance in the fairway to land your ball at a shorter distance than you are normally trying to hit. You will be amazed at your distance.
• Have you ever tried to layup short of the golfers waiting on the fairway and blow it by them. This is my point exactly. Plan your layups and enjoy your consistent distance.
• As Don Trahan (Peak Performance blog)  recently pointed out: ONLY think positive thoughts and your results will be positive.

All you need is consistent drives, fairways shots, chips and putts. Eliminate your erratic rushed swings to eliminate your mishits and your scores will drop below 100, below 90 and below 80.

  • I don’t like Inbee PARK’s swing .The backswing is far too slow ,and the club doesn’t get to a parallel to the ground when going up .
The hip rotation is too slow also (Look at RORY Mc ILROY or TIGER WOODS hip’s rotation ).
Then what about the 3/1 ratio of backswing to the throughswing promoted by JOHN NOVOSEL and which is observed by all great golfers :I believe it’s more a 4/1 ratio!

Twice during my long golfing life I have bought the Tour Tempo book and even experimented with the little audio device you put in your ear. I was amazed how fast the tempos are. The 4/1 ratio was not included on the audio device but I tried all the others and could not match them and hit the ball with any consistency.
I am reminded of John Daly’s advice on starting the back swing: low and slow. I suspect this is advice given to amateurs down through the ages.
It is indisputable that relatively fast 3/1 ratios are used by almost every successful male tour player. It also seems evident that fast tempos are less prevalent on the LPGA. But I suspect that the ratios there may also be in the 3/1 or 4/1 ratio for most of the LPGA players.
I am 75. And for as long as I have played it has been clear to me that a fast back swing did not produce consistent or accurate shots. And I suspect the same is true for most senior and lady players, certainly for the ones that do not have a great deal of strength or large amounts of time to devote to practice.
At the very least I suggest it is a very good idea for any amateur who believes their swing needs improvement to experiment with the ideas expressed in this article.
I.B. Park’s swing may not be considered one you might like to copy but it is effective. Consider also the swing of Nancy Lopez. You can find other fine players with slower tempos if you look.
If your swing feels fast and you are not satisfied with the results, what do you have to lose by experimenting with a slower tempo and transition? I think the GOLFSTR will even help such experimentation. Good luck!

Thanks for your supporting comment Scott. Nancy Lopez is a great example of another pro golfer who has no problem breaking 80 or 70. The backswing just gets your body momentum moving forward to ensure that you are in the right position for the down or forward swing. The speed and direction of the backswing is in the opposite direction to the forward swing (which starts at 0 miles/hour). If a slow backswing helps you get in the right position for more consistent hits then you should try it. My point was only about finding a way to get more consistent hits. Hitting from the fairway is so much easier than hitting from a pond, from behind a tree or in the deep rough.

Raymond, I always love your comments. I know that Inbee has a very different swing which is not like any other professional golfer. Could that be why she is the best (with the lowest average tournament score for 2015)? What we need to learn is that you CAN generate a reasonable down swing speed without an extremely fast backswing. The speed of your backswing just gives your time to set your body and shift your hips. My blog was pointed at 95% of golfers who want to break 80. We dont’ need to swing with the speed of the pros. A 4/1 ratio may work or a 6/1 ratio may be what many golfers need to create a more consistent swing. Consistent hits landing in the fairway are so much easier to hit than hits landing behind a tree in he rough. Enjoy, Will Curry
